Satta, matka and “satta king”

Satta means betting or gambling. Matka means an earthen pot — historically, numbers were drawn from a pot. “Satta king” isn’t an official title; it’s a phrase that spread online for the games and their result pages. Individual games have their own names, such as Gali, Desawar, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.

A short history

Modern satta matka traces back to 1960s Mumbai, where bets were originally placed on the opening and closing cotton rates transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange. When that stopped, organisers switched to drawing random numbers from a pot, and the game spread across India. The cotton-rate origin is why the vocabulary of “open”, “close” and “rates” survives today.

How the game works

In its simplest form, a two-digit number between 00 and 99 is declared for each game at a fixed time of day. A player who has staked money on that number wins; everyone else loses their stake. Bets are collected by middlemen (often called khaiwal) who pass money and slips up the chain. Because a single number out of 100 pays out only the winners, the maths always favours the organiser — over time, players lose.
